Akregator notification applets

I use akregator frequently (but on a gnome desktop), sometimes within kontact, and sometimes standalone. Is there a way to configure akregator so that it fetches feeds as soon as I log in to my computer?

Basically, I do not necessarily want to start akregator upon login, but I do want to immediately see the akregator applet in the gnome notification area. Also, I (probably incorrectly) assume that gnome receiv es the same notification applets as kde.
