Multiple mice

Hi,

I have several systems varying from laptops to dektops, some having touch pads, some having graphics tablets, etc.

I have an AIPTEK graphics table, which I've given up trying to configure as a tablet, it seems it just doesn't want to work, without messing up the whole system as when you modify the X config, you now must have the tablet attached to be able to start X - so much for hot plug, as you configure a device in Xorg.conf, then you remove it and X won't start.. Sigh - The one thing all other GUI O/Ses got right, no need to crash the desktop, just because one or more of your pointing devices wasn't plugged in.

Anyhow I've decided to operate the tablet in mouse mode (means I can take it off the machine and still have X), it works, though the pressure bit doesn't which is a bit sad, however it still makes drawing easier.

My problem, I'm lefthanded when I use a mouse, right handed when I use a pen - though really it's practical, as you can avoid having everything on the same side, it's nice to have the mouse on the left, and the pad on the right :-)..

Unfortunately when I select left handed mouse in KDE, all mice become lefthanded, so that a touch pad, tapping it brings up the menu, pressing down on the tablet, brings up the menu, rather than the click or select which it should be doing. The mouse works as expected. Again I'm sad to note that windows got this right, it actually allows you to individually configure each pointing device, so that you can have a lefthanded mouse, right handed touch pad etc.

Using the righthanded mouse, then the touch pads, and tablets work properly, but the mouse is back to front.

Is there any way of solving this ? Hopefully without having to hardcode things into Xorg.conf, which then forces you to always have the device present - so that X can start - this bit is a real pain on a lap top, if you want to just quickly start the machine without the USB mouse.

Basically I would like to individually configure buttons for each pointing device, I can't seem to see how this can be achieved within KDE, nor indeed via the operating system, without hardcoding things into the Xorg.conf, which leads to the aformentioned problems.

I've searched the net, but I really haven't found anything useful on the topic.

regards
Michael Nielsen.
