On another forum, a user from Australia spends almost all his time there expounding at length and with some vehemence on OpenOffice's awfulnes and the superiority of KOffice in general and KSpread in particular. So I've come back to try out Koffice again. I've already posted about a quirk in KSpread that I find too annoying to put up with, and now I have one that is worse, in KWord.

I have a large and growing collection of Hindi lyrics, most of which were generated using the ITRANS online transliterator, saved as OpenOffice *.ODT files. When I open one of these files in KWord, the result is a mess as in this screenshot:


The image on the left is the ODT opened in KWord, the image on the right is the same text freshly transliterated by ITRANS and pasted into a blank KWord document. The one on the right is perfectly fine, and looks exactly lthe same as the original document does when opened in OpenOffice, as in this screenshot:


The user whose entusiasm for Koffice is exceeded only by his contempt for OpenOffice described OpenOffice as "beta software at best", something he would "never recommend", and described any who would recommend it as having " a very low level of awareness." So far, on two areas, one of which is very important to me, KOffice's score is 0 for 2. If it struggles with locale settings and Unicode import, I'm thinking that OpenOffice is not the only software deserving the "beta" tag. Certainly I now have a much higher level of awareness of KOffice's limitations. Can anyone offer an incentive for me to keep investigating Koffice as an alternative to OO?
