Problem with Programs Not Starting

I've had the most interesting problem since I installed KDE over Ubuntu Feisty Fawn....sometimes (apparently randomly as far as I can see), when I attempt to start a program, I will get the flashing cursor to indicate that the program is attempting to start, but then the cursor returns to normal and the program does not start.
Once that happens, I am not able to start the process manager either to find out if the program is already resident. The only way to restore normal behavior is to restart X. I have observes this behaviour with Firefox, Gimp, Amarok, Rhythmbox, and a few other programs, so it does not appear to be program specific.
Can anyone suggest a cause/fix for this problem?

Thanks.

Nothing? It's starting to look like I'm going to have to go back to Gnome, just because this is so annoying. I've Googled and checked the Ubuntu forums, but I haven't found a solutions. Last call.....

RE: Problem with Programs Not Starting

I'd suggest you try starting the program from
a console window (e.g. konsole).
Watch the messages on the console window.
Maybe they give a hint.
