amarok won't play audio files

When I load Amarok I'm told that 'Amarok cannot currently play MP3 file'. I'm prompted to install them, but when I click on the 'install mp3 support' button nothing happens. I'm able to hear system sounds without issue and I can play music using XMMS or through any of the relevant Gnome sound applications. It was working previously. Any clues?

Thanks very much for your help!
