gtkrc automatically overwritten

I've set up KDE on FreeBSD. My problem is that I'm trying to use Evolution for an email client and I've set KDE defaults as such, but the icons don't work which I've read is a common problem. Unfortunately the fix described works during a session, but reverts as soon as the session is ended and the user logs in again.
How can I set gtkrc or gtkrc-2.0 with gtk-icon-theme-name="gnome" permanently?

RE: gtkrc automatically overwritten

I have the same question. This is the only thing stopping me from using KDE 4. Any solutions?
