Do you use Compiz or Beryl or something similar?

[KDE] Compiz, it is.
When KDE 3.5 ran for the very first time there were 4 desktops. The next time there was just one! Then I tried to change the number of desktops to "click right button on taskbar > configure panel > taskbar (already set to one Desktop) > set the Number of desktops to 4 > Apply > OK."
Even that apparently it accepted that, the change hasn't happened; taking into consideration that the following step was "End current session" and in the next session it was "Restart computer." ?(

RE: It's impossible in my KDE 3.5 Mandriva to set up more than one desktop

yes, compiz switches off the desktop thing in KDE. But in compiz there is something else which enlarges your desktop. In compiz you have 4 horizontal "desktops" as default, in compiz it is called large desktop or so, on a rotatable cube. If you have ccsm (compizconfig session manager) then you may configure your "desktop" size as you like, and configure how you want to reach to the other faces of that cube. You may configure it to use your large desktop like a wall, too.

there is a link where you can get more info about how to configure your compiz-desktop, and many more info

When I access Gnome it worked as you said including the 4 desktops. The problem is whit KDE 3.5. I tried to see what was inside /home/my_user_name/.kde but from Mandiva it was impossible because it’s locked.

So I decided to retrieve /.kde from Windows XP, which is already in my HD. It's possible to see the directory and its subdirectories as well as the archives. Everything is erasable except 3 entities that don't allow any kind of access including the wipe out possibility. There is impossible to determine if they are subdirectories, archives or anything else. ?(

Thank you.

I miss to mention those 3 entities: cache-localhost, socket-localhost and tmp-localhost.:O

RE: 2nd RE: It's impossible in my KDE 3.5 Mandriva to set up more than one desktop

the files you mention are links.
If you want to (re)move the directory ".kde" in your home directory then
1. you don't login at kdm / gdm / xdm or whatever
2. when you are at your login prompt (kdm/gdm/xdm) you just type in Ctrl+Alt+F2 (all three buttons together) to get the virtual termninal,
then you log in as yourself or as root, go to your directory and move your .kde-directory with "mv .kde .kde-old" (without slash!)
3. you may now type Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get to your grafical login site (kdm/gdm/xdm) and login to KDE.

Do you have 4 desktops now? If not then look at the compizfusion session manager (ccsm) if the KDE backend is active for compizfusion.

RE: It's impossible in my KDE 3.5 Mandriva to set up more than one desktop

I changed settings from FULL 3D DESKTOP EFFECTS (COMPIZ) to NO 3D DESKTOP EFFECTS and finally the taskbar showed 4 desktops. Everything works perfectly now.
