true multiple desktops

i'm not sure if this is the right place for a feature request, but i didnt find any feture request link on the site, please tell me if i should post somewhere else

the feature is:
now kde has multiple virtual desktops to put program windows along. but they're all equal, you can only change the background

what would be useful is having different icons on the desktops, so you could have, say, a 'work' desktops in which you put all the work-related things, a 'play' one where you put the links, wine apps etc
and it would be very easy to do either:
one option is to have one folder per desktop in the home directory: this one is easy to use and set;
or (only for links) you could write in the link options in which desktop/desktops you want it
or a combination of the two
or only one desktop folder (as now) and separate config files

what do you think?

If I'm not mistaken, with Plasma in KDE 4 this will be possible. Not reallys sure.

i've read plasma pages and indeed it seems it has this feature along with many more desktop enhancements. but the pages aren't updated, it's not clear what's being done

is there some kind of feature request or bugzilla for kde where i could file this? i can't find any link on the site

Try browsing through the articles in http://dot.kde.org or Aaron Seigo's blog posts in http://aseigo.blogspot.com

I agree, multiple desktops should offer more than just simple context switching. In particular, I would like to assign different color schemes to my desktops. Now before you laugh, let me explain why this is not as frivolous as it seems. I do a lot of photographic work that requires a neutral gray background so as not to skew my perception of color. But when I am using my computer for other purposes, I want to have a colorful scheme just like everyone else. If I could set up a "photo editing" desktop configured with an appropriate color scheme, that would solve this problem very nicely. Even for someone without this special requirement, different colors on each desktop would provide an extra visual cue as to which desktop one is viewing at any given moment.

Right now I am manually switching between color schemes using the KDE control center, which is a pain, and of course changes everything on all desktops. I have not found a way to script this. A search of KDE-Look did not turn up anything useful in this regard. If anyone knows of a way to change color schemes automatically when starting or stopping a particular application, or when switching between desktops, I am interested in hearing about it.

Things I don't like

There are a lot of things I do not like with KDE4. I am using the Kubuntu version installed from the live CD.
With previous versions it was possible to have each desktop with its own color or background. With KDE4 this does not seem to be possible. When I change the background on one desktop, all of the other desktops are changed to the same color/background also. With the previous editions of KDE using different colors or backgrounds made it so easy to know here you were at.
The clock configuration is another item that peeves me. I cannot get it to display the seconds. There is no option to enable the seconds to be displayed.
Also the taskbar now just is not configurable. I have found no way to put commands or menus on the taskbar. The pager also no longer goes on the taskbar. And just why did they change the name from applets to widgets? I didn't know what that was about until I tried it to see what would happen.
All in all, this seems to be a step in the wrong direction in a lot of ways.
Now, do the developers read these forums and accept the feedback, or are we just hot air here?

RE: Things I don't like

these features will be hopefuly implemented in the near future..
but i think there are too many things that have to be done before 4.0 (with higher priority)
