how can I disable Alps touchpad?

I am running KDE 3.5 on Suse 10.2. When I type, the palms of my hands brush across my Alps touchpad , moving my cursor away from where I want it. I would like to disable the touchpad. Unchecking the "activate" button box in YaST does not seem to do anything. Does anyone know how to disable an Alps touchpad? Thanks!
