How to configure font size in Kate?

I'm trying to get Kate to use a smaller font size than the default setting. If I start kate as root, I can select a different font size in the Fonts & Colours, save/apply, etc. I can also create new schemas, etc., and they will remain as I set them the next time I start kate (as root).

However, when I'm using a non-root account (i.e., my normal login), none of the changes I make to the Fonts & Colours have any effect. If I make changes, click apply/ok...nothing happens. I can't create a schema (I get the prompt for the name of a new schema, but nothing happens when I click OK), and although I can select a different font size in the dialogue, it never actually gets applied to the editor, and any changes I make are lost when I re-open the settings dialog.

I'm using Kate 2.5.7, KDE 3.5.7, on Fedora 7-x86_64.

What can I do to fix or work around this? Where are the config files that define the font size, etc., for Kate (I've been scouring my drive, and tried tweaking some files, but nothing has worked so far)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
