windows on secondary display always overlap

Hi,
I'm using KDE on dualhead with different monitors, so that the left one has a resolution of 1280x1024 and the right one(primary) is at 1600x1200. For some weeks, the smaller display's desktop has been behaving strange: popup menus are partially outside of the screen area, and maximizing windows results in the same effect. I think they are just as big as the primary display. I'm not using xinerama, so I've got two separate instances of kdesktop.
KControl also only shows one display on each screen in the mulihead section of kdesktop config (see screenshot, taken on the secondary, smaller display...excuse the localization)
