In my opinion, it is way overdue. I love KDE and most of its applications, including Kontact. However, I am forced to use Evolution at work because we use Exchange as our mail server.

While I honestly don't need access to Microsoft Exchange right now, it would be a good idea to add. I'm pretty sure that's the reason Thunderbird isn't the default mail client for the GNOME version of Ubuntu, and I'm pretty sure I'm unfortunately going to need Exchange access in the near future. It's interesting how I'm a CSIS major and the engineering school is Unix mad, while the business school requires ugly amounts of ugly Microsoft software.

Do you happen to know the reasoning behind the removal?

Exchange support is very much present in Konqueror. I went here for guidance and am now a happy Kontact <-> Exchange guy at work!

How come I can never come up with something original as my signature?

It took too much resources to implement the proprietary exchange protcol into kmail. So the exchange plugin was buggy, badly maintained and not 100% functional.
Since that situation wasn't going to chance in the near future, they removed the buggy plugin leaving kmail without exchange support.
