debian uses so called meta packages.
Those aren't real packages, but discriptions of a bundle of packages in a certain category.
'kde' is such a metapackage.
If you remove a package that belongs to the metapackage 'kde', Debian will remove that metapackage as well.
But that does not mean that the whole of KDE gets removed.
KDE gets removed if you uninstall kdelibs and/or kdebase.

How did you get on with this? I was going to post something similar but did a search and found your comment first.

I am using Ubuntu on my laptop, its not the fastest laptop but I want to slim it down, why a need for Kate AND Kwrite? And Speech synthesis? No need for that at all.

At the moment I've got a lot of packages asking to be removed using apt-get autoremove which I'm a bit cautious of doing as I think it will scrub a lot of things off.
