printing problem

I can print pdf and ps files and also the testpage in cups and kde. I can also send a text file directly to the printer with lp command but if I try to print with kmail, konqueror or most anything else that is not in pdf or ps format the print preview comes up blank and then nothing prints and reports job was aborted.

any suggestions or does anyone know what kghostview or kpdf uses to convert the data to a pdf or ps file.

I'm using KDE 3.5.5, cups 1.1.23 and espgs-8.15 with a HP USB printer.
