Desktop too big, crashes when attempt to change in KDE, xorg.conf doesn't work

I am a noob to KDE and X in general. I'm running FreeBSD 5.5 and have used FreeBSD with success in the past as a headless server accessed through OS X. If I'm am barking up the wrong tree, please let me know. If you be so kind as to at least point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. This is with KDE 3.55

I have edited my .xinitrc to contain;

exec startkde

that is all that is in my .xinitrc file. I have tried to create an xorg.conf file from scratch and also by using xorgconfig. In either case, neither works:) I can only get KDE to launch when I get mv my xorg.conf.

When I run;

startkde 2> errork.txt
or
startx 2> errorx.txt

The error.txt file reades;

xauth: creating new authority file /home/aschmidtm/.serverauth.1341
/usr/X11R6/bin/xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "fbsd.pdxubaru.com:0" in "list" command
/usr/X11R6/bin/xauth: (stdin):1: bad display name "fbsd.pdxubaru.com:0" in "add" command
