KDE incorrectly changing the X11 configuration during initialization

I just installed k-ubuntu 6.10, which uses KDE 3.5.6. after I log in during the kde initialization kde changes the x11 settings to screen res that doesn't work. but its not using my xorg.conf file because that mode line isn't in there. Also in the system settings menu it doesn't show any of the mode's that are available in my xorg.conf file. so the question is, where does KDE get this info, if not xorg.conf??
