kmail and konqueror will not start

After being forced to do an unorthodox shutdown, I started back up--and now neither kmail nor konqueror will start. When I try to start from console, it just sits there and does nothing, not even an error message! However, everything seem to work for the root user!? Is there a way to fix this?
If I should be forced to reinstall kde, which packages are most likely to be the cause of this? I assume it will NOT overwrite my current settings or mail or addressbooks, right?

thanks for any advice!

I think a problem with the KWallet, in case you're using that tool. Isn't there a popup somewhere hidden requesting for a password? Or try disabling KWallet alltogether to see if it solves the problem.
