konsole will not play sounds

I am running CentOS 4.4 with KDE 3.3. Konsole says it is

Konsole 1.4.1 (Using KDE 3.3.1-6.RHEL4 Red Hat)

Within

Control Center / Sounds and Multimedia / Sound System

the "Test Sound" plays fine.

But in Konsole

Settings / Configure Notifications

with the "Play a sound" box checked, if I click the "Test the sound"
button, I hear nothing.

Thanks for any advice.

in kcontrol (configuration panel of kde), go to [sound and multimedia -> sound system] and check if you can test the sound over there.
If not, try to activate the sound system at that panel, or go to [sound and multimedia ->system notifications]
in the lower right corner, you see a button for player settings
open it, and select [use external player] and give a player command like play or aplay

you can check wich command works to play a file from the commandline, like
aplay /usr/share/sounds/sound.wav

Thank you -- that worked ("player settings").
