Where does KDE store it's sound files (e.g. for system sounds etc)?

mmmm ... I don't have a sounds directory, which doesn't make a lot of sense as I can hear them ;)

Is it possible that my OS (DesktopBSD) installs them somewhere else?

Where did you look?
it is always /somewhere/share/sounds, the /somewhere/ part can be anything: /usr/share/sounds, /usr/kde/share/sounds, /opt/kde3/share/sounds, etc. etc, depending on the installationmethod used by your OS.
