Kpilot sync to Palm

Hi All:

Sorry this is a bit long, but I wanted to give you a full picture. I am running openSuSE 10.2, 64-bit edition and just did a fresh install about ten days ago after running SuSE 10.1 for a number of months. I am trying to make an almost clean break from Microsoft (I have a couple of job specific things that require Windoz).

I have had KPilot running for a week or so synching my Treo 650 phone to the "Kontact" databases (Addresses, Tasks, and Calendar). This is my "Leaving Outlook behind" part of my transition. This worked fine for several days and through 8-10 syncs.

Suddenly a few days ago, I did a synch that literally wiped out all the calendar, task, and address lists on the phone. Everything else on the phone (programs, call history, etc.) was fine. I have over 1,000 contacts. But, I still have everything in my two files on the PC and back them up daily, so I have no real data loss, just an empty phone.

After several efforts to get KPilot to reload the Palm from the PC (doing a PC overwrites sync and a couple of full sync), I gave up and did a "hard reset" on the phone. In theory, that should bring the phone to an "out of the box" condition. Indeed, I had no Addresses, Tasks, or Calendar except the 5-6 Sprint-related numbers a hard reset creates automatically.

I tried several different synchs with no full solution. A couple of the Sprint numbers did go from the phone to the Kontact list. Also, a phoney contact I created on the phone went over to the PC as well. But a new contact from the PC did *NOT* show up on the phone.

Furthermore, I created a fresh appointment for today on the phone. It went over to the PC side then disappeared off the phone.

The last sych I did was a "FullSync (sync. also unchanged...). I asked it to let me confirm conflicts. I had changed the new, phoney contact that "originated" on the phone in Kontact to "force" it to be a changed record. KPilot asked about synching that record plus ONE ONLY other record. I chose PC values. But after this FullSync, I have NO contacts again on the phone (it zapped the new one and did not transfer the modified one).

I decided to see if possibly the problem was a corrupt file on the PC side. So I created a brand new user in SuSE, created on the phone one contact, one appointment, and one task. I set up the sych and did the default "Hotsync". The records were added to the initially empty Kontact file. I modified one of the contacts and added one new contact, appointment, and task on the PC side and synced again (still doing "HotSync mode). Zowie -- the phone was wiped out again.-- NOT one contact, appointment, or task remain on the phone. Everything was fine on the PC side.

That would seem to rule out the possibility of a corrupt PC-side data base as it did the same ting with a brand new user sync.

One thing of note -- this started after I added a number of the suggested SuSE repositories and did a software upgrade of about 100 items. I am not sure there is any cause and effect here but it does correspond in time.

I am starting to think it is either a SuSE software issue or a phone problem. I plan to try to sync on a Windows PC as a test to rule out (or verify) the phone as the potential culprit.

This is truly strange. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live off syncing the phone and PC and it really hamstrings me.

I started to put the sync logs in but they look normal and indicate no problems.

Thanks in advance.

Jess

Don't know the answer to your question, but you'd better paste the story at kdepim-users@kde.org .

RE: Kpilot sync to Palm

Greetings:

I decided to try an experiment. I did another "hard reset" on the phone and attached via USB cable to a Windows XP machine and did a sync to Outlook with the Palm hotsync. All the Calendar, Address, and ToDo records transfered correctly.

I went back to the SuSE 10.2 machine. After saving backups of the std.ics and std.vcf files, I did another FullSync between the Treo 650 and KPilot. It took a while but the results were even stranger than before...

* On the Treo, all calendar and todos were gone and some of the addresses (but not all) remained
* On the PC, all the calendar and todos were copied to the PC (left me lots of duplicates) but the address book was largely unchanged.

FYI -- I had only "Calendar", "Addressbook" and "ToDos" checked in KPilot.

So, I am pretty sure the problem is not the phone but something in the KPilot sync process.

HELP!

Thanks,
Jess

RE: Kpilot sync to Palm

Hello, I have the same problem wit my palm Zire 31. All the data in the address book, agenda and to do list disappear form my Zire during a hot sync. However data form other applications remain in tact. A full sync or "PC to override Palm" does not restore the PIM databases on my palm. If I add en entry in one of PIM application on my Zire it is added to the appropriate PIM application of "Kontakt". I change the user's permission to include "uucp". These are the user permissions of the symlink "/dev/pilot" and its target "/dev/ttyUSB1". No success.

Your and my experience rules out problems with the devices to be synced.

My guess would be a problem in the routing between the USB port and the USB node in /dev, probably caused near or by the kernel. Why?

The daemon "g15lcd" to capture the second USB link of my Logitech G15 keyboard does not connect to the proper "input" node, as it should. It probably connects to the input node of my Wacom tablet. This results in very poor performance of my PC and a "var/log/message" file of several G's in a short time.

I used the same KDE version packaged with OpenSuSE 10.2 under OpenSuSE 10.1 en did not experienced any problems. This seem to rule out problems with KDE.

I am not knowledgeable enough to determine the next step to solve these problems and hope that anyone has a solution.

This article comes from the kpilot website:

Huge Merge; Data Loss Fixes??

2006-11-20
Thanks to the persistence of Sune Vuorela, the intrepid kpilot developers (okay, well Jason with spurts of help from Adriaan) spent the majority of the weekend backporting the kpilot code base from the codeyard.net repository into KDE's SVN repository. The hope is that this will address the data loss problems that debian and ubuntu users have been reporting with kpilot (from kde's 3.5.5 release) and pilot-link 0.12. We now require pilot-link 0.12.1 or greater for kpilot, thanks to some major bug fixes in 0.12.1. Jason backported the code into the temporary kdepim-3.5.5+ branch (/branches/work/kdepim-3.5.5+), and this branch will be merged back into the main kdepim 3.5 branch in preparation for the upcoming kde 3.5.6 release

Same problem - recent versions

I saw that this error in this thread that this error was fixed with 0.12.1 version of pilot-link, but I have the exact same problem with a treo 600 and that version. The calendar information goes to the PC but it wipes out the calendar data on the treo. The memo and address book are ok.

Using Suse 10.2
pilot-link 0.12.1-27
KDE 3.5.5-102.6

Creating a kpilot log (
kpilotDaemon > /tmp/daemon.log 2>&1
see http://cvs.codeyard.net/kpilot/faq.php#a…f5fb6a84f0f8d6e )

I get this:

kpilotDaemon: ERROR: [virtual PilotRecord* PilotSerialDatabase::readRecordById(recordid_t)] Encountered an invalid record id 136982536
kpilotDaemon: ERROR: [virtual PilotRecord* PilotSerialDatabase::readRecordById(recordid_t)] Encountered an invalid record id 136317864

kpilotDaemon: ERROR: [virtual PilotRecord* PilotSerialDatabase::readRecordById(recordid_t)] Encountered an invalid record id 159291608

(it generates an error for, I think, every record in the calendar)

Is there something with KDE that I need to upgrade also? Workaround?

Thanks in advance
