File Selector takes too long

I'm on Kubuntu 6.10, KDE 3.5.5...

No matter which app I open the file selector from, Kate, Open Office2, Firefox, etc, it takes literally 2 to 10 MINUTES before the icons on the files resolve, and I can move the scroll bar and/or click on a file to open.

First question: how can I stop the file selector from loading the file-type icons?

Second question: How do I figure out why it's taking so blasted long for the file selector to resolve itself?

BTW, I have a gig of memory with approximately 400 meg free, swap is not even being used, and the cpu is completely idle while this is going on.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!
