Having trouble starting KDE

I am using Gentoo have emerged and configured X11 which comes up with startx and I just emerged KDE.

After issuing: echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc

And editing the /etc/rc.conf file with: DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

And: rc-update add xdm default

startx does not start KDE and only an x session - I get this error at bootup for XDM:

Error could not start Display Manager... xdm: no process killed

Any ideas?
