Can't connect to freenode.net

I just down loaded Kopete and can log into my account in Yahoo but I can get into freenode.net so I can sign up for classes on Ubuntu. I must not be configuring the server right or something. Is there anyone out there that can help me with this. I have tried to change the setting a number of times but still can't connect.
