Monitoring connections to my network

I'm on a small home network (about 3 computers). I run ktorrent from time to time, however my housemates have told me that it slows their systems down a little. Is there a way I can monitor the network so see when a computer connects? Then I could shut off my application.

Thanks,
jreidy

<edit> I should add that it's not my network, and I dont have access to the router!</edit>
