One stop installers for KDE?

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if there are any 'one file installers' for KDE that work on debian-based distros? I've tried to compile KDE 3.5.3 on my Debian "Sarge" computer, but it fails in the Qt3.3.6 compilation stage. Then I tried to install an update for Qt to 3.3.6, but that fails because I have libarts-xine on my computer and it requires libqtc102-mt (which libqt3-mt was trying to remove/replace).

I've checked in the binaries, and there are a lot of them for KDE3.5.3. So, I was hoping that there was a one-file installer that would download all of the rest of the binaries (as needed) and install them automatically. Rather then having to download them all one-by-one and install each of them one-by-one.

Since Debian hasn't gotten around to testing/approving KDE 3.5.3, I need to find an alternative. I'm even willing to download .rpm files and either use rpm (if possible) or alien to convert them to .deb files.

Thanks for any help with this,
Patrick.

I read something about kde 3.5.4 being available for Debian, so i guess kde 3.5.3 should be available, either in 'unstable' or 'testing'

If you don't want 'unstable' or 'testing', keep in mind that a kde-version from an external source probably won't be any more stable then those.

As for 1 file installations: KDE is a whole is too complicated to be offered as a 'one size fits all' package; you need a mechanism like APT to get the whole thing right.

Re: One stop installer for KDE

Hi Rinse,

Thanks for your reply. Off hand, you wouldn't know which version is the 3.5.3 for Debian, would you? They don't have it listed as 3.5.3. They have it listed as something like 5.44 and 5.47.
I tried to compile it from source, but the QT library won't compile. And when I tried to install that one from a deb file, I get an error that it conflicts with another qt file (which is required by KDE, or at least portions of it). So, it won't install either.
If I know which version is the right one, then I can at least try to apt-get it, or download it and install it via aptitude (I hope).
Thanks again,
Patrick.
