Customizing the taskbar

When customizing the taskbar with background images or colors, we can't change all of the settings in one go. We have to enter for each of:

K-menu
Hide
Menues
Appearence
Task bar
and panel background.

This should be easier and all in one operation.

More efficient use of the taskbar.

Like many, I tend to keep my most commonly used application launchers on the taskbar. An improvement I would like to see is the ability to stretch the taskbar to more than a single line in height, as getting the taskbar to hold the applets, launchers and other information I desire soon runs the content to greater than a single line can hold.

Just as the desktop management applet scales to a second line when the size of the taskbar permits, the ability to have smaller icons in a multi-line taskbar would make more efficient use of the space the taskbar makes available.

Having to scroll through several levels of menus to reach applications is at best tedious, and as I like to keep the number of desktop icons to a minimum, the quick launch capability provided by the taskbar makes life so much easier.

Extra bling, fade effects and animations to my mind do nothing to make a desktop more user friendly, and only get in the way of efficiency.

Regards,
Morrie.

We could have more than one side or edge with a taskbar.

ApplicationĀ“menu to the right and windows task bar on the bottom etc.

While that would be an option, doing so would take up more of the viewable screen width (or height for those that prefer to place the taskbar on the side of the screen). I tend to like having as much screen width as possible for the tasks that I am concentrating upon.

Even with packages like evolution, the folder list on the left-hand side of the screen is in my opinion, wasted space, as it is only required when switching between folders. A simple drop-down box that gets out of the way once it's task is done provides more screen area with which to actually read the mail contents.

Morrie.

you know that kicker will be completely replaced by a plasmoid? everything is possible right now... if you've got a bit of programming skill you'll be even able to make your own easily. i'm sure there'll be many different and there won't be such a hacking needed like in kde3 for inclusion of 2 menus (like in opensuse 10.2)
