No Ogg Vorbis playback after upgrading 3.4 to 3.5

I have a bastardized Debian (used to be sid, now mostly sarge) install that I just upgraded from KDE 3.4 to 3.5.0 using the backport packages @ debian-unofficial.org. The upgrade went very smoothly. However, no oggs will play from a KDE applicaton. IE No system sounds, no kmail notifications, no juk output. However if I select a wav or mp3 file, they will play fine.

I can play an Ogg from ogg123 or xmms fine. Ogg and Vorbis libraries look fine.

An ldd of a KDE app shows it sees the vorbis libs ok.

ldd /usr/bin/juk
...
libogg.so.0 => /usr/lib/libogg.so.0 (0x41c1a000)
libvorbis.so.0 => /usr/lib/libvorbis.so.0 (0x41c1f000)
libvorbisfile.so.3 => /usr/lib/libvorbisfile.so.3 (0x41c46000)
...

I even reinstalled the libs with no joy.

Ideas?

Dave
