No sound

I have KDE 3.5.2 installed and I am running the Gentoo 2.6.16-r9 kernel with ALSA running as modules. I am able to play sounds using madplay in the console but when I load into KDE I am not able to play any sounds. I have already checked the mixer levels and I have tried using it with artS and also without artS USE flag set. I'm not sure what else to try to get the sound working in KDE. Any suggestions?

RE: No sound

Does aRts set the sound device free after a certain time? That is configurable in the KDE Control Center under Sound System.

You could also try to run

Source code

1
$ artsdsp -m madplay somefile
and see if that works.

It's not that I can't use other programs to play sound, that works fine, what I don't understand is why the arTs system won't produce any sounds when I try to test it.
