No sound at all

Hi,

I installed kde some times ago, all is working fine now except the sound. I have no sound at all and yes Arts is installed (but maybe not well configured?).

When trying to activate the sound system in kcontrol>sound system, I have this message:

Error while initializing the sound driver
Couldn't connect to server
The sound server will continue, using the null output device

I'm not sure to understand what it means. I have no idea what I should do I didn't find any helpful hint in the kde home page.

Do someone know how to enable sound?
Please help me to configure kde to have sound.

My configuration:
-----------------------
mac ibook ppc g4
kde 3.5.3 installed with fink
iBook ppc g4 1.42 GHz
Xorg

RE: No sound at all

It's hard to decide whose fault it is. Do other applications (non KDE applications, like aplay) produce sound. Or the classical test

Source code

1
$ cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
(or wherever your sound device may be).

RE: No sound at all

Hi,

Amarok is working fine, but the system sound is not working.

typing $ cat /dev/urandom in the terminal gives a lot of strange unreadable thinks and I don't have /dsp in my /dev directory

Do I have to set something in /dev/urandom? Or install Alsa? I'm not sure about it.

For info, my knotifirc file says:

Arts init=false
knotify init=true
Use Arts=false

Thank you for helping.

RE: No sound at all

The urandom thing was intended to test if your sound card works at all. So it's an aRts only problem.

You could try to (re)move ~/.mcop and ~/.mcoprc from their place and see if the sound system works then. I assume there are no other users logged in at the same time claiming the sound device?

No, there are no other users logged in.

I tryed to enable the sound system in kcontrol>sound system, with the ~/.mcop removed (I didn't find any ~/.mcoprc)

I had the same error message then before and a new ~/.mcop was made.

Do you have any other idea?

Thanks

I'm having the same problem, when I use madplay in the console or a terminal window I can get sound but when I launch KDE I can't get any sound. I've tried setting the hardware to autodetect or ALSA but either way I can't get it to produce any sound.
