I was wondering if anyone has a solution to this problem:

I'm building NetBSD 3.0 i386 with Window Maker and KDE. Window Maker login ok for su and user through kdm when needed. For KDE, .xinitrc .xsession ($HOME for root and user) properly point to startkde. Root startx opens KDE desktop. User SU opens KDE desktop, but in root unsecure for normal use. When startx for normal user get errors:

mkdir: /home/xxxxxxx/.kde/share: Permission denied
/usr/pkg/bin/startkde: cannot create /home/xxxxxxx/.kde/share/kde/config/startupconfigkeys: Permission denied
can't open /home/xxxxxxx/.kde/share/kde/config/startupconfig

Waiting for X server to shut down

xauth: error in locking authority file /home/xxxxxxx/.Xauthority

I seem to have hit a wall and don't know if this is a configuration issue or if I haven't set user permissions correctly. User is wheel.

Can anyone help with this PLEASE?

Um, I take that back. When kdm is added to /etc/rc.local, kdm logon screen works. Can enter Windowmaker, but cannot access simple xterm, etc, etc. I've disabled kdm until I get the KDE user login issue resolved. When I can login to KDE, I won't need Windowmaker and I think kdm will let me login as user to KDE, but now it just kicks me back to the kdm screen with no error messages. I get them when I look at the console. Just thought the extra information might shed some light on the overall challenge.

Me again. I thought this might help other users. After reading some other posts, I figured I'd try to delete some of the extra garbage in my home folder. That didn't work, so I created a test user and was able to login to KDE desktop. The wheels were turning now! I deleted the account and home folder that would not log-in and created the same account again. Voila! Log-in successful.

I guess during install of KDE, I mucked something up. It installed a lot of .xxxxx type config files.
