sound issue

hello all,
i've just installed ubuntu (breezy) on my 64bit P4 3.2Ghz and ASUS P5GD2-X.
at first i didnt like using gnome - and i managed to get KDE 3.1 (??) and its growing on me.

i tried the live cd at first and i thought its pretty simple and i'll get the hang of things as i go along - but now that i actually have it installed i find myself quite in the deep end.

i need help with a few things (and if anyone can help i'd be much appreciative)
i've searched the ubuntu forums, linuxquestions and other websites, but this KDE forum seems more specific to what i need :)

1st query:
I have an onboard C-Media CMI9880L 7.1 Channel card. and having trouble with the drivers.
the cd comes with drivers but i cant quite follow the steps. and would like help in clarification.

Quick install
=============

1) You must have full configured source for the Linux kernel which you
want to use for the ALSA drivers. Note that ALSA drivers are part
of the kernel, so there is necessary to resolve all symbol dependencies
between the used kernel and ALSA driver code. Partly installed kernels
(for example from distributor makers) can be unuseable for this action.
2) You must turn on sound support (soundcore module).
3) Run './configure' script.
If you do not want ISA PnP support, use --with-isapnp=no switch.
If you want sequencer support, use --with-sequencer=yes switch.
If you do not want OSS/Free emulation, use --with-oss=no switch.
If you want turn on debug mode use --with-debug=full switch.
If you want debug soundcard detection try --with-debug=detect switch.
If you have kernel source code in another directory than /usr/src/linux,
   use --with-kernel=<kernel_directory>.
   Example: ./configure --with-debug=full
4) Run 'make'.
5) Run 'make install'.
6) Run the './snddevices' script to create new sound devices in /dev directory.
Skip this step, if you have a kernel with the DEVFS support.
7) Edit your /etc/modules.conf (see the kmod support section below).
8) Run 'modprobe snd-xxxx' where xxxx is the name of your card.
Note: All ALSA ISA drivers support ISA PnP natively, so you don't need
isapnptools any more. Don't use both together. It will
conflict. For disabling the ALSA ISA PnP support, specify
         --with-isapnp=no configure switch.

You can also look at the utils/alsasound file. This script is designed for
the RedHat distribution, but it can be used with other distributions which
use System V style rc init scripts.

my 2nd query is
trying to get macromedia flash working... it does not seem to have an installer suitable for EM64T. any ideas?

my use with linux is strictly limited to what i've done so far.
i've learnt to figure out change directory command, ls, pwd, tar xvf, gzip -d, and thats pretty much it.

its taken me the whole day to install amsn, and to sort out my geforce 6600 nvdia card, and also managed to get videolan working. its a steep learning process and i will be thankful for anyone who can lead me in the right direction

cheers

i've narrowed it down to this step... how do i find the XXXX name of my sound card??
i know its a C-Media CMI9880L anyone help?

I have amarok playing the mp3, its running a xine engine, and has the correct OSS output plugin.

can anyone point me in the right direction??? i cant deal with a computer without sound, and if i cant get this working i'll be going back to XP.

OMG HAHAHA YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! I got it working!!

applications->sound and viddeo->volume control->file->change device
recognizes the c-media 9880L (OSS) and also another option for intel (HDA mixer)

you have to go to the switches tab and tick the appropiate speakers.

stoked!
