kdemediamanager service won't start

I'm having trouble getting kdemediamanager service to start. When I click on the service and click "start" I just get an error saying that the service was unable to start.

I have no idea where to begin looking to solve this. There is nothing in the system's log files.

This is really important to me because we just set up a new diskless lab, and the users need to use CDs and USB memory sticks. If KDE won't auto mount these because kdemediamanager isn't running...that's just another reason for the users not to use linux :(

Thanks for any help
Greg

PS, I straced "kcmshell panel" and clicked start on the service but didn't get much info.

RE: kdemediamanager service won't start

Are dbus and hal running in the background? How did you install KDE? You're sure you have all dependencies installed?
