UI improvement proposal [Kopete]

I wasn't too sure of where I should put this.. well anyway I got the idea that Kopete should be more intuitive to use for new users. I was envisioning something like this:

Image

This dialog box would popup on startup, and you can pick the network(s) you want to connect to; it would function as a quick connect, so that one wouldn't have to create an account in kopete to login to $network. In the [likely] case your account id is different on different networks, or if you want to save other settings than just the account id, you can create a "group account", where you can specify what networks you want to connect to by default etc.

In the account id field, you can either type in your account id, or just select it from the dropdown list (MSN Messenger style, where you can select accounts you have previously logged in with). When you select a group account, the network(s) and nickname you were last logged in with would be automatically selected (the defaults can of course be adjusted before you connect). The modify button would only be used to modify accounts you've created in Kopete.

Any comments, or other ideas?

I prefer current style.

It works like most other multi-IM and on the first ever start-up you got a wizard helping you with the account setup.

Yes I am aware of that. However, there are situations where having to set up a local account isn't too practical. The reason I even started to think about this was when a friend who's inexperienced (read dumb ;) ) with computers wanted to log on to MSN. On startup there was nothing to indicate what the user should do, so of course he had to ask me how he is supposed to login. After setting up the account for him it was all pretty straightforward, but my point is that it would be nice to at least have an option to be able to quick connect for situations where there are many people using the same computer. It would also have the bonus of not cluttering up the system tray menu with a whole load of accounts that isn't regularly used (of course you could just remove the account, but it's still pretty many steps to take if a person just wants to login once or twice ;) )

so what you are suggesting is a button for adding an account?

So a quick button for Settings>Kopete Settings>Accounts...

It's already there... just a bit hidden.

Go to Settings>Set Menubar and then add "Settings" and there you go ;)

You'll still have to delete the account after using it though, this can be done by pushing the same button and delete...

PS. I am not someone related to Kopete or KDE. so it's just my humble opinion.
Please say so if this is not what you intended.

PPS. My KDE is in dutch, so translations of terms may be a slight bit off...
