kde 3.5.0 installation - Qt and zlib related errors

Hi everyone!
I am using Trustix (a Fedora-based server-usage distribution) and this has no graphical user interface, not even the Midnight Commander  This OS has the 2.4.31 kernel, but most of the general libraries and compilers and stuff have quite recent versions.
So I installed a graphical server (XFree86) and I want now to install KDE. I got all the packages from the site and the how-to and I tried to follow it step-by-step reading all the official documentation encountered.
I choosed to install KDE 3.5.0 and looked for the necessary dependencies. I found out that I need Qt. I got the latest stable source version (4.1.0) and compiled and installed that.
Now, when I start checking for the instalation of the KDE packages (aRts - as it is recomended the first to be installed), ./configure gives me an error message, and it's something like: "libz: probably XFree86 overwrote an older version. Please remove it from your system." So I guessed I don't have zlib installed or something - but I found that there IS libz, and it's version 1.2.3. (the most recent). So I hide the libz-1.2.3 file, run ./configure again and I get another error message: "Qt error (version >= Qt 3.3 and <= Qt 4)".
So my questions are: do I need an older version of Qt (between 3.3 and 4.0)? and what do I have to do with zlib so that it can be used?
Thans,
Alin.
