Sound Troubles

Hello all, I've just taken the jump to Linux in the form of Kanotix for my laptop (Panasonic CFW2). I'm using KDE 3.4.3. Thus far things have been going very well but I have one main problem; no sound. As far as I can tell everything should work, as the system found my harware as when I:

cat /proc/asound/****

it spits out all sorts of information about the hardware. The sound configuration panel reports no problems, and all of the media players work... just nothing comes from the speaker. Of the various mixers on the system none seem to corespond to each other (ie I can change all of the volue settings in one and they are different in the others) so I think it might be as simple as my sound is muted. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I am determined to learn Linux. If I need to provide any information to help diagnose the problem just tell me what I need to do to get it.

Thus far:
cat /proc/asound/cards produces:
0 [I82801DBICH4 ]: ICH4 - Intel 82801DB-ICH4
Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with STAC9752,53 at 0xe0100c00, irq 9
1 [Modem ]: ICH-MODEM - Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Modem
Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Modem at 0x2400, irq 9

It is the integrated audio on an Intel 855GM board (centrino)
