i must be doing something wrong

on slackware 10.2, i was only able to get to kde by running xorgsetup and changing the screen resolution one down from the best option. So now by running startx i am able to get to kde, but the screen is pixelated and very ugly. there is no sound, and i have no clue how to get online. on the version of kde which comes with mandrake 10, i am able to just navigate to configure your computer> internet> add new connection. boom, done. but the version on slackware has no such option that i have found. i dont understand how an older version of kde on mandrake, autodetects everything and the newer version on slackware runs like hell and wont detect anything.

running mozilla makes the resolution get really bad, so that i cant even read whats happening.

i have no idea how to manually install this stuff, if that is even the issue here.

this is a toshiba satelite a25 laptop. trident cyberaladdin graphics card. wireless and lan capable. again, everything works on mandrake, nothing on slackware.
