moving my mails/contacts to new PC

Hi all
I just got a new laptop running kubuntu 5.10. I would like to move all my mails in kmail from my old PC to the new one. Can someone explaine how I can do that.

Thank's Gerhard

The mailboxes are located in /home/<my_user>/.kde3.x/share/apps/kmail/mail
If you are able to connect directly to the old machine, you could probably share the folder and use the import functionality of kmail.

If not, I guess that it will work if you copy the contents into the mailboxes on your new computer using an usb-key or such. Make sure that you first create the same account(s) on your new system in order to avoid incompatibilities.

RE: moving my mails/contacts to new PC

I have recently tried to import my mail from an old Mandrake 9.1 system onto a 2006 version. I have copied all the directories across including all hidden files. Thefolders and mails appear in K mail but when I click on them the subject changes to No subject and the sender changes to unknown. It would only seem to be an index problem but I am not sure how to get further than this. It has been suggested that I need to change to MBox file format but I am not sure if you can do this en mass and I am trying to import several hundred mails.
Regards Steve

You can't copy the whole folders as is, you need to copy the content only.
By the way, probably the better way would be to copy it to a usb-key and then use the import functionality in kmail, that way you won't have the problem with some ID-mismatch.

RE: moving my mails/contacts to new PC

The right place to ask this kind of question is on the kdepim-users mailing list, which exists for the purpose of dealing with user's problems (and figuring out if the problem really is a bug). The list is publically archived, too, so it's searchable and the solutions are available to everyone. You don't need to be subscribed to post messages to the list, though you might miss replies if you're not subscribed. The list address is kdepim-users@kde.org .
