A GeForce 6600 128MB provides more than enough horsepower for KDE, I just (two weeks ago) upgraded to a GeForce 4000 MX from a NVidia Vanta. Both cards run fine.

As to what this particular problem is I don't know. I guess I'll list off the usual suspects...
_ Have you checked your xorg logs?
_ Do you have the latest NVidia drivers?
_ Are you running with transparency/drop shadows?
_ Does the problem occur at regular intervals, or when you do something specific? (Can you reproduce the problem?)

Hopefully someone has seen this before.

I have been having this problem on one of my two computers. It shows up mostly as diagonal lines from the upper left corner of the screen but sometimes it is like the screen shot.

A little history might help in solving the problem.

It first showed up when I tried to install Fedora Core 4 on a Compaq RU5000US. Had no problem with core 3. I got no help from posting the problem on the Fedora Forum.

I decided to change distros and settled on Ubunto/Kubunto 5.04. No problems.

Bought a new Computer. No problems period. Installed Ubuntu/Kubunt 5.04 - no problem.

I have now upgraded to version 5.10. This distro has two desktops available at login. "gnome" or "KDE". Both desktops have the same file structure. (I can run my "kdevelop" and "Qt" programs from the "gnome" desktop.).

I have identical (I think ) installations of Ubuntu/Kubuntu on both the old and the new Compaq computers. I have made several downloads of the distro ,iso disks and re-installed them several times. Always the same result.

There are no problems when in the Ubuntu desktop on either computer!

I get the problem when in the Kubuntu desktop on just the new computer.

Sometimes clicking on "Refresh desktop" clears up the screen.

My un-educated guess it has somthing to do with the current KDE desktop code as it has only showed up in later versions. I am now using "K Desktop Enviroment Release 3.4.3" on both machines.

It is not a distro problem as I have had it with both Fedora and Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

Hardware problem???. Two independent user have had it, but only one of my computers has it. Clock speed??

I can give more detailed information and some "snapshots" (if I can figure out how to attach them)

I responded with the requested snapshots,

I did not have THE problem WITH Ubuntu 5.04. but I do with 5.10. I did not have the problem with Fedore core 3 but I did with core 4.

I can't remember the earlier version, but now I am running KDE version 3.4.3.

The problem rarely shows up if I am using a full screen application if at all. Right now I have not had any problems writing this reply until I moved the cursor down to bring up the "hidden" panel at the bottom of the screen. As soon as the panel popped up, I have a screen full of diagonal lines. No more problems until I toggle the panel again, then more lines show up. It doesn't happen all the time, maybe once every 4 or 5 times. If I go to another desktop and came back the lines are gone.

I am not a computer person, I am a structural engineer that does programming, but it sure seems to me that there is a problem in the desktop area of KDE 3.4.

I had this problem, too. I thought it was probably due to using the Xorg generic "nv" driver rather than the NVidia "nvidia" driver, but I am not sure. I downloaded the NVidia driver, but could not get it to install. After about two weeks of frustration I started modifying the display settings. I changed the color depth from 24 bits down to 16 bits and the problem hasn't happened since. It's been about two weeks and it seems okay. Before, it never went more than a couple of days (sometimes only minutes) before scrambling the screen. I can't tell the difference in appearance, so this works for me.

I figured it had to do with the display drivers since it seems to happen in the display memory. I think one reason some applications work okay in full-screen is because they update the entire display. Windows that try to optimise by only updating parts of the display seem to have memory conflicts with other partially dispayed windows. That's my 2 very small monetary units in your locale.

I AM STILL HAVING THIS DAMM PROBLEM. Other people have had the same problem. I did not even start this thread!!! I have been working for oner 2 years rewriting my old commercial programs for release as Open Source programs. I have been using Qt and KDevelop. i DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO START OVER IN SOME OTHER SYSTEM.

i have to keep a strip of desktop exposed so I can click "refresh desktop" about every 30 seconds or so WHEN EVER KDE writes somthing to the screen. No problem with my old slow ME box. but my nice sew shinny XP box, well.

Has any one who has had this problem fixed it? What did you do.

I have loaded "Blender" which uses a "full" screen, no KDE. NO PROBLEMS!!
When running a KDE prrogram ( KDevelope, Kwrite, Qt etc) or where some of the KDE desktop shows I get the problem. IT HAS TO BE KDE. Am I wrong ??

Isn't anyone @ KDE the least bit interested in addressing a serios problem????

Well at last I have found my problem!!
The screen driver on the mother board of a brand new factory built Compaq computer.
I spent a whole day with Mugly XP trying it to allow me to install an ATI vidio card and disable the mother board card.
I still don't understand why nobody on this forum tried to help, or even ask a question.
