reboot/shut down from KDE 3.4.2

Forumers,

I recently installed KDE 3.4.2 on my Mandrake 10.0 box, everything seems to work fine, except when I'd like to reboot or shut down my PC while still logged into KDE. No matter what I select, I simply log out and get kicked back to the login screen. Now I can reboot/halt from there just fine, but not when I'm in KDE.

I also have KDE 3.2 installed - this functionality still works properly when I'm logged in there. This is most definitely a KDE 3.4.2 thing.

Something else I noticed, is that if I want to make any changes to the login screen (using kdm), I have to log in to kde 3.2 as root and make my changes there. Any changes I make while logged in as root in kde 3.4.2 don't take effect. It's as if mandrake is loading the version of kdm associated with kde 3.2 and not the new install.

Can anyone shed some light on why the reboot/halt doesn't work in 3.4.2, and why I might have these kdm problems? I'd appreciate it!

Thanks,
Dan

That's very likely.
Do you have 3.2 installed from Mandrake RPMs and 3.4.2 installed from source?

RE: reboot/shut down from KDE 3.4.2

Yes, actually that's exactly how it's installed - 3.2 came w/ MDK 10.0, and I installed 3.4.2 from source since I couldn't come across any MDK 10.0 KDE3.4.2 rpms from any mirrors.

I would still like to keep 3.2 installed, but run 3.4.2 alongside it as the default, and only go back to 3.2 when I really need to look at how I had something configured.

Is it possible to modify which kdm is used? Would that also help the Reboot/Shut Down problem I was having in 3.4.2?

You will have to change the runlevel script/link that starts kdm to start your new kdm.

And yes this might be related to you shutdown/reboot problem.
