Problems with menu and kcontrol

Ciao,

I have KDE 3.4.2, installed locally (I don't have root privileges, with kconstruct.
I've been using it for a month or so, without problems.
Yesterday I noticed that the Kde menu was lacking most of the applications. I don't know when this problem occurred, i.e. I don't know if it followed the installation of something. In any case, the only apps present in the menu seems to be mostly the ones installed after the KDE installation. But I'm sure everything was ok some days ago, well after I installed most of these programs.
However, I tried to start kcontrol (which is not in the menu now) from a terminal and got:

kio (KSycoca): Trying to open ksycoca from /var/tmp/kdecache-sbianchi/ksycoca
kcontrol: WARNING: No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found ! Defaulting to Settings/

The control center lacks all the modules, except for the 'Network' one, which, however, is void.

Do you have any clues?
How can I reconstruct the menu and 'repair' kcontrol?
What happened?

Thanks.

pretty close to the same issue

"How can I reconstruct the menu and 'repair' kcontrol?"

Anyone? Anyone? I need to do this exact thing.... my application menu is wiped the config file is completely missing. I'm going to attempt to reconstruct the applications config file and see if that fixes it.
