konsole comes up but no input/output

Hi,
My configuration is Gentoo1.5+Xorg+KDE3.3.2. Every shell I start in konsole is blank with no prompt and does not echo either. I tried to use konsole config menu to set command to /bin/bash or bash, and to set directory to empty or /bin, but did not see a prompt whatsoever. Any idea?
