Broke my config on gentoo (latest portage version)

So I think I've accidentally overwritten or removed some important kde config files. I can't get the kde login screen, and trying to run startkde from the command line after starting X server in failsafe gives me a million "kde cannot connect to xserver" errors. It also says it cannot connect to display '', which probably means it's not configured to try to connect to display 0. Any idea which config files need fixing? Need more information to help?
