kmail offline imap

I am using kmail cached (disconnected) IMAP to access my mail in an exchange database via vpn. Thats why its disconnected IMAP; I connect to the network, get my mails, disconnect. All fine so far. The only thing is that a few minutes after I disconnect I get a big error come up telling me that the imap connection has timed out. So the question is why does a disconnected IMAP account need a connection? KDE 3.4.2, kmail 1.8.2.

Maybe you have enabled the option to check the IMAP server at regular intervals.
