KDE start up sounds not working as user

Hi. I first encountered this problem on Slackware 10.0. Before I installed a mm kernel with Alsa the KDE startup sounds worked ok. After I'd installed the Audioslack kernel I lost the startup sounds, but if I login as root to KDE GUI the sounds play. This is using kdm . I have the same problem now on a Gentoo install. If I login at kdm as root the KDE startup sounds play, but as user, nothing. I've tried changing permissions in Noatun, and Kmix as a last resort, but nothing seems to sort this problem. It's obviously some sort of permissions problem, but I can't figure out where. Is there perhaps another group entry needed for KDE sounds? Obviously this would not be needed when logging in as root, as root has total control of the system. Any help really appreciated. Not that I'm obsessed with system sounds, but I'd like to solve the problem. Nigel.
