Climbing out the Window

Hello all.

I've been using Red Hat WS on a Pent III 450 for a few weeks now--my first non-Redmond experience (well other than Commodore Pets and 64/128s) and really love it. Though I'm concerned--when running KDE or GNOME the hard drive status/duty light cycles on and off every 3 to 4 seconds. I don't get into virtual mem--seem to have plenty of actual mem megs. The CPU usage spikes at the same time the HD light flickers--in a range of 20-30%.

We run used-donated computers here (non-profit art council) and the hard drive started clucking, then died. I swapped in a similar drive and got everything running again (had been doing regular back ups) and this drive is doing the same duty-cycle flickering.

When I'm out of 'X', this condition doesn't occur.

Any ideas or tips?

Thanks!
Geoff
