Desktop icon scrambling

I need to do something like this in a script:

xrandr - set resolution to 640x480
run app
xrandr - restore resolution to 1152x864

After restore the original resolution, the desktop icons are all moved from their original positions. Is there a setting that will prevent the icons from moving? Or a dcop interface that could query and restore the icon positions?
