Translucency

I'm trying to get KDE 3.4's translucency to run on my IBM ThinkPad A30. Following this post

I got KDE up and running. Currently, I am using the kernel build-in radeon driver (I think) w/o DRM. When translucency is activated, I get weird screens, my background is gone and all windows seem to appear twice. Here's a screenshot:

Any ideas what the culprit might be? I used to get translucency to work (albeit with a lot of lag) when using Fedora Core and the pre-compiled binaries.
