fonts too small, mouse cursor too big after wiping out kdmrc

I wiped out my kdmrc file and made a new one with 'genkdmconf --no-old'. After that, I've been having some weird X problems:

1) the mouse cursor is too big. its actually just the pointer cursor and the insert text cursor that are too big. the other cursors (resize window, and click on link cursors) are fine.

2) the fonts in KDE are all of a sudden tiny. the weird thing is that only the fonts configured by kcontrol are affected. the fonts in konq are not affected. also, if I change my xorg.con file to have 'DisplaySize 300 250', it fixes the problem. 300 250 is just an arbitrary number (as far as I know). I choose 500 450 and it didn't work.

I'm using fedora core 3 and kde 3.4. My cursor theme is the default Bluecurve one.

Again, I didn't have any of these problems until I wiped out kdmrc.

Thanks for the help.
