kMail cant send messages - help

New to linux and KDE am running KDE 3.2, Mandake 10.1 through a USB ADSL modem to connect to the net. The PC is dual boot with win xp.

have set up KMail correctly with POP3 and SMTP and can send and receive messages to myself - part of setup procedure.
Cannot send messages to any other mail address - "relay access denied"

All works fine under win xp and outlook.

What am I doing wrong ??

RE: kMail cant send messages - help

Have you configured the POP and SMTP for your loalhost MTA or for your providers mail server? I think you have a local mail server running and are sending the mails to this server, but this specific local mailserver is not configured to send (relay) them to your provider's mailserver... Check the configuration of sendmail/postfix/whatever or configure your mail client to communicate directly with the provider MTA

RE: kMail cant send messages - help

Look, I am a user so I dont know what a MTA is - that may sound real dumb to you but I'm sorry.
I set up the KMail system as indicated in the instructions - the only way I know how to do it. My ISP is wanadoo in France and I set up my send mail server as smtp.wanadoo.fr - just as I have done in Outlook under win xp.
Linux and everything associated with it seems designed for people who want to spend hours sitting in front of a screen - I have a business and family to support and cannot waste time with a box of electronics and code that wont do what I want.
At the moment Bill and his OS get my vote for ease of use !

RE: kMail cant send messages - help

Check your KMail Configuration tab->network->outgoing mail if there is a default entry for sendmail (or postfix or similar) in there and delete it. There should only be one entry in the list, the account you created for your wannadoo account

OK guys and gals, problem solved.
Within Mandrake control centre/Internet connection were some DNS server numbers that were not mine and I didn't need them to authenticate my server.
Cleared the boxes and off to go !
It was a Mandrake issue not Kmail
