Menu problems with KDE3.4 and Mandriva Linux

A search didn't bring up any reference to any other discussions here about this one....

Situation: running Mandriva 2005LE, with KDE3.4 installed from RPMs in the 'thac' repository. Most things going well, but there is a persistent issue with menus. The symptoms:

1. Most KDE applications have duplications in menus. I'm using Konqueror to post this message: the menu bar across the top reads:

Location Edit View Go Bookmarks Tools Settings Window Help Bookmarks

.. so Bookmarks is duplicated. Within the Window menu (as one example), the entries start with 'Split View Left/Right', go down to 'Move Tab Right', then repeat that whole set of entries before going on to 'Show Terminal Emulator' and 'Show Navigation Panel', each of which appears only once. Several of the menus within Konqueror have this sort of duplication, but not all of them. In other K applications, the duplication seems similarly random. KOffice is exempt. A new Kopete, compiled directly from svn, also exhibits duplications.

2. When any new application is installed (or updated), most of the quick links on the kicker disappear, leaving only the 'view desktop' and 'console' ones.

3. At some point, the main K menu has lost all its icons for folders. The application icons are there, but each group of applications simply shows a standard folder icon.

No-one in the Mandrake newsgroups & forums seems to have been able to sort anything out - has anyone here any idea what might be causing this? Where does KDE keep its menus, and is there anywhere else it might be merging things in from?

Hope someone can help - it may seem a small problem, but it's really a bit of a pain!

Dont know much about Thac's rpms. Try this it may help. Put this in your .bashrc file

export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/usr/etc/xdg/
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share
